What is autologous fat transfer?
Autologous fat transfer (fat grafting) is the removal of unwanted fat cells from a donor site and injecting the cell into a recipient site. The fat cells are autologous because they are harvested from the donor and then injected back into the same donor at a different site. The fat cells are used as a natural filler similar to synthetic dermal fillers.
What is autologous fat transfer used for?
Fat transfer is used to add volume to areas of the body which lack significant volume either through loss during the aging process (facial rejuvenation, hand rejuvenation), defects following liposuction procedures, scar revision.
Fat transfer is also used to enhance volume in areas to provide a more pronounced appearance as in lip augmentation, natural breast augmentation and brazilian butt lift (gluteal augmentation) procedures.
The goal is the same if volume is lacking or not, to give a more full appearance to the area of concern.
How is autologous fat transfer performed?
Fat cells are obtained (harvested) from the donor site utilizing either small volume or large volume liposuction depending on the volume of fat needed for injection of the recipient site. At 4Ever Young Aesthetics & Wellness, we harvest the fat cells under 100% tumescent anesthesia using microcannulas and gentle liposuction to obtain viable fat for reinjection. The fat cells are then processed and prepared for reinjection at the recipient site. Small cannulas are then used to transfer the fat to the recipient site creating the desired result.
How if autologous fat transfer different than dermal fillers?
The goal of dermal fillers and autologous fat transfer are the same, to add volume to an area of concern. The difference is that autologous fat is from the patients own fat cells (a natural filler), which in most cases provides a large supply of product for harvest and reinjection. Dermal Fillers are (synthetic hyaluronic acid or collagen fillers) which are limited in volume due to the expense associated with the product and the impracticality of its use where large volumes of filler are necessary (breast, butt, hand and large areas of the face).
Autologous fat, unlike synthetic dermal fillers, is semi-permanent. Although not all of the grafted fat will survive, a larger volume is retained for several years as opposed to synthetic dermal fillers which last anywhere from a few months to a year, depending on the product.
